This post is intended to answer three questions through my understanding:

  1. What does it mean to use social media to build networks?
  2. How are we motivated to engage with a networked public?
  3. What are the risks and rewards of public communication?

What does it mean to use social media to build networks?

Social media platforms and tools are used to connect with others and expand social networks. For example, creating a personal account on social media and posting content, interacting with others, sharing your life, participating in community activities, and gradually building up a network.

How are we motivated to engage with a networked public?

There are a variety of justifications for using public networks, including:
To improve learning, it is essential to track down students majoring in related fields so they can exchange information about the many issues they have in their coursework and learn from one another. From a business perspective, many stores have adopted the online store plus the physical store situation in today’s society and even eliminated the physical store due to its expensive cost. This is based on the Internet’s current rapid expansion. Public networks are where most new items and news are released quickly regarding information access. Besides, sharing your life online, posting lovely photos, and sharing interesting articles or videos with like-minded people are all motivations to participate in public networks.

What are the risks & rewards of public communications?

In public communications, risk and rewards coexist.

Risk:

Fake Identity and Fraud: There is a chance of fraud and fake identity in public communications. Identities can be concealed, fraudulent information can be published, and dishonest actions can be taken.

Rumors and misinformation: In public discourse, rumors and false information spread swiftly. People are easily misled or given false information, which can cause misinterpretation, disinformation, or deceptive manipulation.

Reward:

Information access and knowledge sharing: People can access a wide range of information, knowledge, and insights in numerous sectors, thanks to public communication. People can gain from the knowledge and experience of others and impart their own insights and knowledge to others.

Connection and social interaction: Public communication offers a platform for social interaction and connection, helping people widen their social networks, make new connections, and deepen existing ones. People can engage in community activities, share experiences and interests with friends, family, coworkers, and strangers

Business opportunities and branding: Public communications allow people and businesses to advertise their names, goods, and services. Individuals and organizations can raise visibility, draw in potential clients, and investigate commercial connections and opportunities through social media and online communities.
